TOUR INFORMATION

Choosing a Tour Length

We look forward to talking with you about what kind of tour adventure you would like to have. Each days tour will be customized based on weather and ocean conditions, tides, location of whales and sea otters, and other factors, but if we know ahead of time what you are looking to do, we can better plan the day when it arrives.

Departure times will be 8 AM unless all parties agree to a different departure time.  (Anywhere from 6-9 AM will usually work, but we will coordinate with you ahead of time).  Meet at the North Cove Harbor in Craig; the Luna Sea will be waiting for you at the bottom of the ramp.  North Cove Harbor is the larger of the two harbors and is the one with more big fishing boats.

We are permitted by the USFS to go ashore at certain locations to go beach-combing, picnicking, hiking, tide-pooling and to have campfires.  If you wish to do any of these activities, let us know!

What to Bring
Weather

The weather along the outer coast of Prince of Wales Island can vary from wet, windy, and rainy to sunny and warm.  The summer temperatures range from highs of high 50s to the low 70s.  Rarely it will get into the 80s-but don't count on it!  The prevailing summer weather patterns are wet, grey storms blowing from the southeast off of the Pacific Ocean, or sunny skies with west winds building in the afternoons with occasional fog in the morning.  The town of Craig gets 90 inches of rain a year; so make sure you are prepared for rain!

Boating in southeast Alaska means being prepared for varying conditions.  It is often cooler on the water than it is on land, especially if there is wind or rain.  Bring or wear layers (warmer layers than you think you'll need), a raincoat and boots (preferably mid-height rubber boots.) Bring a hat and sunglasses, as well as sunscreen.  Sturdy sandals are handy on a hot sunny day for stepping off of the boat into the water, and knee high rubber boots are usually the best option. Synthetic and wool clothing are much warmer in the cool moist weather and will keep you much warmer than cotton if you get wet.

Bring your cameras and spare batteries and memory cards!!  You might easily burn through cards and batteries if the whales are putting on a show.  It is a great idea to have a waterproof point and shoot camera and a waterproof case for your smartphone if you plan on using it to take photos or video.  Pentax Optio WG and Olympus Stylus TG cameras are both waterproof and affordable point and shoot digital cameras that are recommended.  The locals almost all use Lifeproof cases for their smartphones; it is wet around here and these cases provide excellent protection for your expensive phone in our inclement weather.

Binoculars are handy to have as well, especially if you like birds, but they will give a closer look at whales, sea lions, sea otters, and other animals we might see.  There will be at least two pairs of quality binoculars on board,  but spare pairs are always handy.

What to Wear and Bring
Seasickness
Seasickness

Our goal is to conduct our tours in locations where no one will be subject to seasickness, but occasionally the ride might be a little rough and sensitive individuals may feel a bit queasy.  If you are prone to seasickness or suspect you might be, you might want to consider taking steps to make sure you have an enjoyable day and don't get sick.  The following are remedies that work well for many people. Be sure to know how to use them beforehand if you think you might need them.  Some do not work if taken once you are already on the water.

  • Bonine

  • Dramamine

  • Motion-eze

  • Scopolomine (prescription only)

Sea Otter Guarantee

We guarantee that sea otters will be seen on every trip 4 hours and greater.  If there are no sea otter sightings, we will take you out again at our expense at the next possible date.  Sea otters are abundant off the west coast of Prince of Wales so we are sure to see them everytime.

While we do not have a whale guarantee, it is highly unlikely to NOT see whales on all of our tours.  It has happened on rare occasions however, such as when there is an algal bloom and the whales move "outside" temporarily.  If there is a bloom event which seems to happen for a few weeks every few years, we will let you know.  During these events, there are still other animals to be seen, and the water color is stunning, making for a unique experience in itself.
